Tasting notes
The 2009 Rosso Piceno Superiore Podere 72 (Montepulciano/Sangiovese) is less overtly ripe than the 2010, which gives it better balance in my view. Red cherries, plums, tobacco, spices and brambly notes are all woven together beautifully in the glass. Once again, Poderi San Lazzaro has produced a jewel of a wine. Best of all, the Podere 72 is a stunning value. In this vintage, the Sangiovese seems to be particularly expressive, while stylistically, the 2009 isn't as opulent as the 2010.

Anticipated maturity: 2013-2019. Poderi San Lazzaro is one of my very favorite estates in the Marche. The wines are rich, layered and always loaded with personality.
