Tasting notes
Listán Negro, Listán Prieto, others. Field blend from 80-year-old vines in three vineyards in the paraje Lomo de la Sepultura (San Mateo village). Each parcel was hand-harvested separately. 40% whole bunches were used. Daily punching down by foot-treading to encourage a lighter extraction. 40 days of maceration, then pressed to finish the alcoholic fermentation in stainless-steel vats. Neither fined nor filtered. Around 5,000 bottles produced. Tasted blind. Very pale ruby colour that captivates and attracts attention. Lactic, minty and very fresh. A touch of struck match, acidulous red fruit and damp earth. Delicate tannins that provide an aerial texture. Very light and delicate. Burgundian in a way. Lots of freshness, resembling a top Morgon. (FC)

The 2020 Agan is a collaboration with Hahlo Custom Clothing, friends of Peña and wine lovers. Agan means "half," and the idea is to blend two different vinifications from the same vineyard planted with Listán Negro, Listán Prieto and some local white grapes, 90-year-old, head-pruned vines on volcanic soils with clay and sand at 1,300 meters in altitude. Half of the wine fermented with 50% full clusters and the other with 100% full clusters, each in an open-top barrel, with a 30-day maceration, soft extraction and pressing, blended after pressing and then matured in stainless steel for nine months. It's only 12.5% alcohol, and these wines are never too high in acidity, but they are always fresh. It has the house style but with a little more austerity and possibly aging potential. It has a very expressive and precise nose with flowers, berries and herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and precise and clean flavors, with tension and finesse. Very easy to drink, very tasty. Approachable but serious and with aging potential. There is superb balance here. Only 600 bottles were filled in October 2021.
