Tasting notes
Score 90/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2004

Medium red. Redcurrant, plum, brown spices, mint and chocolate on the oaky nose. Intensely flavored and sappy but initially hard-edged, with notes of blackberry, licorice and cocoa powder. But this complex and intriguing zinfandel turned creamier and sweeter with aeration and finishes with fine, powdery tannins. Although this wine is labeled as zinfandel, there are more than a dozen other varieties interplanted in this vineyard, which dates back to the middle of the 19th century.

Score 89/100 · Drink 2003-2008, Robert Parker, Oct 2003

This wine may merit an outstanding score if it calms down and becomes more delineated. It is an impressively endowed (16.6% alcohol) 2001 revealing aromas and flavors reminiscent of sweet cherry cough syrup intermingled with cola, earth, and spice characteristics. Dense, full-bodied, and corpulent, with enough acidity to nicely buttress the heavy duty flavors and high levels of glycerin, it will drink well for 4-5 years. Tel. (707) 933-1726
