Healthy medium red. Red fruits, olive tapenade and a note of andouillette on the rather wild yet vibrant nose. At once supple and sappy in the mouth, and much less funky than the nose suggests, with its fruit flavors complicated by black olive and dusty cocoa powder. A lovely energetic wine with a persistent finish--still full of life. Back in the late '80s and early '90s, I regularly utilized this cuvée as a ringer in blind tastings of premier crus from Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges, and this outperformer from vintage 2001 would work well too.

Medium red. Perfumed aromas of raspberry, cherry, flowers, licorice and minerals; like a baby Echezeaux. Sweet, ripe and easygoing in the context of the vintage. Today this seems softer and a bit less vibrant than the Hautes Cotes de Nuits, without quite that wineÂ’s grip, but this is even riper.

The 2001 Cote de Nuits-Villages displays a nose of spiced blackberries. Roasted coffee beans, spices and dark fruits can be discerned in its lively, slightly rustic character. It should be consumed over the next 5-6 years. Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC; tel. (202) 832-9083

Bright, deep red. Pretty aromas of blackberry, raspberry, licorice and minerals. Juicy, vibrant and rather powerful, with good acid cut; not a fleshy style but boasts solid density. Finishes with notes of chocolate and roasted oak. As with the Hautes Cotes de Beaune, this still has a trace of malic acidity.
