Tasting notes
Inky ruby. Powerful cherry and cassis aromas are deep and brooding; surprisingly dark in personality for a grenache. Broad, palate-coating cherry and dark berry flavors are enlivened by baking spices and pick up a note of bitter chocolate on the back end. Pretty impressive for its sheer mass and in need of a grilled hunk of red meat. No way I'd have guessed this to be grenache though.

The bottled wines include the 2006 Grenache Larner Vineyard, which offers notes of raspberries and cherries, good purity, medium body, and a nicely layered feel. However, it does not reveal the depth, richness, or overall aromatic complexity already exhibited by its 2007 counterpart. Drink the 2006 over the next 2-3 years. A serious Central Coast producer, the Herman Story Winery builds up its strength and credibility with each new vintage. Kudos to winemaker Russell From. The barrel samples of 2007s I tasted display the freshness, elegance, superb purity, and concentration this vintage has produced. Tel. (805) 714-9966
Sporting a jet black, completely opaque color, the 2006 Herman Story Grenache Larner Vineyard is a powerhouse that just won’t quite and offers up decadent levels of dark fruit, blackberry, espresso roast, and vanilla aromas. Full bodied with awesome texture and a long, heady finish, this is massively concentrated and structured. I don’t think anyone would guess this as a Grenache based wine but it’s delicious none the less.
