Tasting notes
(14.6% alcohol) Saturated medium ruby. Explosive aromas of blackberry, leather, brown spices, smoked meat, truffle, iron and violet; I would have picked this as French, not Californian. Suave, bright and peppery, with flavors of dark fruits, leather, pepper, gingerbread and smoke, complicated by a saline nuance. Finishes firm and persistent, with dusty, sweet tannins and notes of blackberry and cherry cola. Distinctly more vibrant than the Fess Parker example.

From a northern, cool climate site, the dense ruby/purple-colored 2002 Syrah Ventana Vineyard, harvested on November 1st, emerges from sandy/loamy soils. Floral scents intermixed with aromas of black fruits, pepper, earth, and underbrush are followed by a sleek, medium-bodied, nicely concentrated mouthfeel, sweet tannin, and an attractive, long finish. Enjoy it over the next 5-6 years. Tel. (510) 749-WINE
