Score 93/100 · Drink 2015, Robert Parker, Aug 2015

The 1997 Syrah Saralee’s Vineyard is ripe, full-bodied, opulent, and still a magnificent wine nearly 20 years after bottling. I always thought these wines had a shorter window of drinkability, but this effort certainly proves that wrong. Still a deep plum/garnet/purple, the wine offers up bacon fat, some spring flowers, blackberries and licorice, with hints of pepper and meat as well. This is a beauty and a terrific example of the Midas touch of Dick Arrowood with so many different varietals.

Deep red-ruby. Red berries, gunflint, smoked meat, licorice and spearmint on the nose. Lush, full and pliant in the mouth, with lovely fruit intensity and notes of minerals and oak spice. Here the acids are ripe and harmonious. Finishes with fine, even tannins and a late suggestion of smoked bacon.
