Not surprisingly, Mussy's three 1990 Pommards are more structured and tannic than the Beaune premiers crus. The 1990 Pommard-Epenots, which needs 4-5 years in the cellar, may ultimately turn out to be Andre Mussy's best wine. Not as dramatic as the two Beaunes, the color is a saturated deep ruby. The nose offers up powerful scents of red and black fruits, minerals, smoke, and wood. In the mouth, it exhibits enormous richness, excellent definition, and a finish that lasts for more than a minute. Anticipated maturity: 1996-2010. When Andre Mussy, who is now approaching eighty years of age, says that his 1990s are one of the three greatest vintages he has ever made, you know you are in for some remarkable wines. This is a terrific line-up of explosively ripe, rich, juicy wines bursting with fruit and character. While I have adored Mussy's wines in numerous vintages, these are the best I have tasted. Importers: William Grant and Sons, New York, NY and a Becky Wasserman Selection - various importers.
