The outstanding 1999 Shiraz Grateful Reserve (125 cases from Shiraz vines that are 40 years of age) shows a smoky, oaky style with medium body, excellent blackberry/cassis fruit, but not nearly the intensity, texture, and layers of flavor. Bright ruby. Black fruits, pepper, lead pencil, caraway seed and smoky oak on the nose. Elegant and fresh, with claret-like texture and weight and nicely restrained sweetness. Finishes with suave tannins and subtle, slow-building persistence. At a relatively modest 13.2% alcohol, this can't match the '98 for sheer ripeness and density, but it stylish juice.
