Fortified with distillate from Palomino grapes. Aged under flor for an average of 4.5 years. Bottled six times a year to capture as much freshness as possible. Pale lemon in colour. Bone dry with pungent yeasty bread-dough notes. Saline with toasty almond character and gleeking (that’s when your salivary glands involuntarily shoot saliva) citrusy acidity. It is utterly insane to me how cheap good sherry is. This wine is a textbook Manzanilla of superb quality and freshness that will set you back a total of $15 for a bottle or $8 for a half-bottle. What a treat! GV ! Take your savings and buy better-quality olives and almonds to match it. (SCJ)

Unique aromas of dried apples, lemon blossom, almonds and cream. Hints of seaweed. Full-bodied, yet focused and tight with lively acidity and a beautifully composed finish of fruit and flavor. Always a winner here. Screw cap.

This is a special bottling of the NV La Guita Manzanilla presented exclusively in magnum and with the bottling date of March 2017 printed on the back label. This is a bottling from the spring, when the wine tends to be more expressive and aromatic. As this is bottled in magnum it should have a slower and longer development in bottle. The nose is quite harmonious and the palate has pungent flavors and very good balance. Only 600 magnums were filled in March 2017.

Grupo Esteves. Bottled January 2017, 30% from older soleras, 70% from younger ones. Cold stabilisation and membrane filtered. Citrus aromas on the nose, then more full-flavoured – yeasty and nutty – on the palate. There’s a salty freshness but a breadth of flavour too, quite a structured wine, with a bready finish. (JH)
