Score 88/100 · Drink 2013-2017, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2011

The 2008 Head Honcho is 100% Syrah that spent 26 months in 500-liter barrels, 60% new. It is a dark, rich wine loaded with blue and black fruits. Frankly, I don't find this as engaging as some of the less expensive offerings.

Frankly, I don’t find this as engaging as some of the less expensive offerings. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2017. This lineup from Barrel 27 is rich in value-priced offerings. The wines are defined by soft, silky tannin, an overt expression of fruit and phenomenal length. They may be a little over the top for some readers, but there is no denying the great value these wines offer. Tel. (805) 237-1245; Fax (805) 237-1246; www.barrel27.com
