Score 93-95/100 · Drink 2021-2036, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2014

The 2011 Charmes-Chambertin is drop-dead gorgeous. There are no hard edges or angular contours to be found in this exceptionally polished Burgundy. Layers of floral-infused red fruits build to a finish of pure sensuality. The Charmes puts on considerable weight with time in the glass. This is going to be a fascinating wine to follow over the coming years. The 2011 was vinified with 100% whole clusters and aged in 50% new oak.

(100% vendange entier; no pigeage, only arrosage for this cuvee, noted Lignier, who works the soil here and buys the grapes; from Mazoyeres vines adjacent to Charmes): Bright, deep red-ruby. Purple fruits and violet on the nose, but with a faint tired note lurking. Slightly medicinal black fruit and licorice flavors could use a bit more depth. Finishes with building, dry-edged tannins and slightly evolved notes of chocolate and mocha. The ripest of these 2011s but a bit too much for me.
