90% Pallagrello Nero, 7% Aglianico, 3% Casavecchia grown on pergola. Mid to deep crimson. Beautiful, captivating nose of crushed red fruit, with a hint of violets and iron and with a little lift from the oak. Gorgeous blueberry and raspberry palate. Gripping concentration and at the same time elegant and with a cool-climate edge. Super-fine tannins and sensationally balanced, this is an exceptional wine in every way. (WS)

I'm on the fence. Giovanni Ascione tells me this is the best vintage he has ever made. I am less satisfied, however, with the purity of the bouquet displayed by the 2016 Sabbie di Sopra il Bosco. Of the various vintages I have tasted (starting with 2010), this is my least favorite. I am distracted by a note of impurity—a musty note—that I fear will worsen with time. This is definitely a wine of character, with its imperfections and all. I would suggest drinking it young while those primary notes of black cherry and plum are still intact. Production includes 7,630 750-milliliter bottles and 120 magnums.

There’s a veritable explosion of blue fruit here, but the ripeness is spot-on. Blueberries, hot stones, violets, roasted herbs, bark, tea leaves and cedar. The palate is very focused with lithe and velvety tannins that run over layers of finely tuned fruit through to a long, intense finish. What a wine, and a new find for us! Delicious now, but better in 2021.
