Tasting notes
The deep purple/plum-colored 2017 Syrah Portteus comes all from a site in the Rattlesnake Hills and was brought up in 30% new oak. Fabulous notes of mulled black and blue fruit, pepper, lavender, and green olives give way to a medium to full-bodied, ripe, rounded, beautifully textured effort that has sweet tannins, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish.

Full dark red. Aromas of dark fruits, licorice and tree bark convey modest complexity. Supple and a bit salty on the palate, showing moderate depth and nuance to its flavors of dark berries, menthol and herbs. A very well-made red wine but I wanted more varietal complexity, not to mention fruit sweetness. Finishes with firm but smooth tannins and decent length--a bit drier and less satisfying than the Va Piano Syrahs from Les Collines and Stoney Vine vineyards.
