Score 90/100 · Drink 2003-2010, Robert Parker, Aug 2003

A beautiful offering from Bruce Neyers, the dense purple-colored 2001 Syrah Cuvee d’Honneur exhibits plenty of bacon fat, creme de cassis, and blackberry characteristics as well as notions of licorice and camphor. Full-bodied and opulent, with loads of concentration, great purity, and a lusty finish, it will provide immense pleasure over the next 5-7 years. Tel. (707) 963-8840

(also from Hudson Vineyard; aged in 50% new oak) Saturated ruby. Knockout Northern Rhone-like aromas of blackberry, violet, bacon fat, roasted meat and baking chocolate. A step up in sweetness, with dense, thick, powerful flavors of black fruits, woodsmoke and pepper, complicated by notes of game and gunflint. Finishes with big, broad tannins and superb length. These 2001 syrahs are about much more than mere fruit, and yet I missed the higher-pitched berry, spice and floral tones shown by the Neyers 2000s.
