Bright purple. Dark berries, olive and cracked pepper on the nose. Sappy, slightly wound-up blackberry and bitter cherry flavors gain sweetness with air and pick up a smoky quality. The peppery note resonates on the modestly persistent, smoky finish.

Inky purple. Vibrant, youthfully unevolved aromas of black cherry, blackberry, licorice and violet. Juicy and tight, with deep dark berry and bitter chocolate flavors and strong acid cut. Firm tannins keep this wine's fruit under wraps on the slightly bitter finish.

Pretty deep crimson. Light but reasonably fresh nose. Then lots of round, supple fruit – apparently much fuller and riper than most North Rhône 2008 Syrah – not a hint of pepper! Lots of winemaking here but a good attempt to cover up the vintage’s shortcomings. There’s even a bit of alcohol on the finish! But au fond there is not really much in the middle – but it’s a triumph of prestidigitation. Very light, soft tannins. (JR)
