Medium ruby. Currant, graphite, coffee and roasted oak on the nose. Very ripe and concentrated, with good floral and mineral lift to the rather chunky dark fruit flavors. In a distinctly dry style, finishing with big tongue- and tooth-furring tannins that build with aeration. (The pungently oaky Vaucrains similarly lacked sweetness and seemed brutally tough and tannic.)

Produced from 15 hectoliter per hectare yields, the chocolate syrup-covered black cherry-scented 2003 Nuits-St.-Georges Clos des Argillieres (red) is a thick, yet fresh, wine that will please the most decadent hedonist. Hugely rich, dense and super-ripe, this mega-Nuits assaults the palate with untold quantities of sweet dark fruits and chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, it is a powerful effort with an enthrallingly sweet and lengthy finish. Projected maturity: now-2014+. Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC; tel. (202) 832-9083

Full saturated ruby. Blackberry, minerals, licorice and bitter chocolate on the nose. Fat on entry, but with a violet florality giving lift and definition to the wine's dark berry and chocolate flavors. Not overly sweet. Good rising finish features sweet, horizontal tannins and excellent length.

Fresh and relatively lively fruit. Yes! Some spice and definite inky tannins. Probably will get there eventually. (JR)
