Muscadelle. RS 290 g/l. The oldest base wine is well over 60 years old and 'only the finest wines are allowed in to this exceptional solera', we were told. This half bottle is labelled Topaque. Vibrant brownish red. Really complex on the nose. Sun-dried raisins, treacle, some walnuts. And lift. Really very smart indeed. And hugely long. Such life! (JR)

37.5 cl. Blackish with a yellow rim. Floral, fresh aroma. Very old and rich and syrupy but with lovely roses and quite enough acidity – even almost painful to taste thanks to the concentration. Very harmonious whole. Clean if not that persistent a finish. (JR)

The NV ‘Isabella’ Rare Tokay offers a deep brown color with the slightest edge of green. The nose is complex with earthy loam and girolle aromas giving way to treacle, toasted hazelnuts and toffee. The palate is unbelievably sweet and viscous but there is also jaw-clenching acidity that perfectly balances that extreme unctuousness. Very long in the finish with layers of nut and spices really developing for those that can actually wait before taking another sip of this gorgeous nectar. These fortified wines are all bottled to drink now. The extended solera aging process has rendered them relatively stable to changes and they can be stored for a good number of years. Tokay (made from Muscadelle) has been renamed Topaque, to please the Hungarians and the EU authorities. Muscadelle picked very ripe, short fermentation before fortification and maturation in oak. The oldest wine in the blend is 60 years. Dark burnt toffee brown with a greenish edge. Walnut coloured. Utterly raisined, utterly sweet but still has a fine raisined citrus fruit tang on the finish. Malted dark toffee. Some cold tea note – classic.  (JH)
