(14.3% alcohol): Medium ruby-red. Aromas of plum, mocha, licorice, sweet butter, fresh herbs and tobacco leaf show a faint weediness. Then rather suave in texture, showing good inner-mouth lift and a light touch to its flavors of plum, herbs, tobacco leaf, flowers and soil. Slightly green in the style of many wines from this vintage but with plenty of flavor depth and very good length. The well-buffered tannins should hold this wine for at least another decade. Very Cabernet--and very Stags Leap.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon. A block that started performing very well in 2005. A young vineyard. They were blending it but decided it was too beautiful to blend – a pure expression of the Cabernet on this property. Fermented in stainless steel with skin contact for 35 days. 20 months in 70% new French oak barrels and 30 % used. Bottled 6 June 2010. 500-800 cases. Fragrantly herbal, red fruit. Very structured. Real presence and glorious fruit – quite sonorous. Lovely red-fruit flesh but the palate weight is streamlined with absolutely no fat. Racy. Sophisticated and classy. Suppleness and grace. Stunning. The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Tomahawk Vineyard is a bigger, richer wine than the straight Cabernet Sauvignon, but it isn't as materially better or more complex as the price difference suggests. Firm, yet well-integrated tannins support a core of dark red fruit, flowers, mint and licorice in this bold, structured Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Tomahawk Vineyard is a bigger, richer wine than the straight Cabernet Sauvignon, but it isn’t as materially better or more complex as the price difference suggests it might be.
