Score 93/100 · Robert Parker, Dec 2009

From Howell Mountain, the outstanding 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Rancho del Oso reveals more mineral and wet rock characteristics. It is one of the top single vineyard offerings in this vintage. As I have written in the past, Beringer offers between 200-250 cases of each of their single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons that go into their Private Reserve program. Interestingly, as good as the single vineyard cuvees tend to be, and they’re all very different, the Private Reserve blend is as good or better than the finest single vineyard, demonstrating that the blending process is essential and important. Good red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of roasted currant, smoked meat and chocolate show a slightly porty quality. Very fat and thick but a bit youthfully disjointed today, with the wine's strong acid/tannin spine sticking out. The wild berry and cedar flavors seem a tad dry. Tough going right now.
