The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru shows some reduction on the nose, although there is clearly a wine of pedigree underneath. A subtle honeysuckle scent emerges with time in the glass. Again, it needs to address a bit of reduction. The palate is well-balanced, with a dash of pepper on the entry and a silver bead of acidity; it's more malic than some of its peers. It has fine depth and vigor; perhaps it just lacks a bit of grace on the finish. But it should mature well in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Let Folatières 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet, just a little reduction, dried honey and a touch of honeysuckle, gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy opening, a fine bead of acidity, quite concentrated with light tropical tones towards the green olive-tinged finish. Maybe this just misses a bit of tension, but otherwise this is one I would drink earlier than others. Closure: Diam

Volnay’s Domaine de Montille is one of the most historic in the Côte d’Or. Founded in 1730, the property remains family-owned and run, with Etienne de Montille – the ninth generation – at the helm today.
