The 2015 Grenache Besson Vineyard, from head-trained vines planted in 1910 on sandy soils, shows the challenges of the vintage in its roasted flavor profile. Hints of dried cherry, tobacco, menthol and dried flowers add a measure of complexity. I would prefer to drink the 2015 sooner rather than later.

Pale ruby-purple in color, the 2015 Grenache Besson Vineyard offers up raspberry and violets on the nose with wafts of dried herbs, fragrant earth and black pepper plus a hint of mint. Medium-bodied and firmly structured with chewy tannins, it has a good core of red berry, earthy and herbal flavors and a long grippy finish.

Coming from an old vine site (some of the vines are 100+-years in age) in Santa Clara County, the 2015 Grenache Besson Vineyard from Angela spent 11 months in one neutral French puncheon and one neutral barrel. It has a lighter ruby color to go with notions of raspberries, kirsch, dried soil/sandy notes and spice. Medium-bodied, elegant and silky, this wine has considerable charm framed by polished and pure tannins. It plays nicely in the house style and is certainly delicious. Focusing exclusively on Grenache, winemaker Angela Osborne continues to pull from some of the oldest vines and vineyards in California. She makes a silky, elegant style of Grenache that’s often reminiscent of a Pinot Noir.
