(vinified with 30% stems; 10% new oak): Bright medium ruby. Aromas of blackberry, red licorice and Espelette pepper. Juicy and supple but a bit dry, offering hints of dark berries and black olive. Finishes with a repeating suggestion of red pepper.

The standout of the 2013s is the 2013 Syrah from Walla Walla. Incorporating a splash of Grenache and raised in 10% new French oak, it has terrific notes of black raspberries, blackberries, peppery herbs and violets in a medium to full-bodied, supple, elegant package that shines for it purity of fruit. It drops off a touch on the finish, but is still an outstanding wine made in a consumer-friendly, charming style.

Aromatics of ripe purple fruit are followed by earthy, toasted bark notes on the palate, dusty tannins and a persistent finish. A bit disjointed currently though with promise – could use a bit of time in bottle. (ECB)
