Tasting notes
The 2008 Bull by the Horns is an intriguing blend of 55% Syrah, 31% Tempranillo and 14% Petit Verdot. The Tempranille and Petit Verdot contribute a measure of structure and tannin that is missing in some of the other wines here, most notably Head Honcho. This shows terrific balance, with expressive aromatics, generous fruit and well-integrated tannins. Crushed flowers, scorched earth and licorice add complexity on the intense, powerful finish.

Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. This lineup from Barrel 27 is rich in value-priced offerings. The wines are defined by soft, silky tannin, an overt expression of fruit and phenomenal length. They may be a little over the top for some readers, but there is no denying the great value these wines offer. Tel. (805) 237-1245; Fax (805) 237-1246; www.barrel27.com
