Tasting notes
Bright red-ruby. Slightly high-toned aromas of dark cherry, cassis, violet, licorice, black pepper and menthol, plus a hint of woodsmoke. Juicy, intense and tightly wound, but with sexy spicy sweetness to the very dark flavors of blackberry, cassis, violet and licorice. Spicy and wound-up on the firm-edged finish. This needs time.

The Phil Lane Syrah is always gorgeous, and the 2012 doesn't disappoint. Coming from the vineyard lying just in front of the Smith's house on the eastern edge of Walla Walla, it offers terrific purity and focus to go with perfumed cassis, white pepper, violets and spice-driven aromas and flavors. No lightweight, it has full-bodied, richness, a big, layered mid-palate and great finish, all suggesting it will evolve nicely. I think it will benefit from short-term cellaring and have 15 years of overall longevity.
