The 2007 Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes is impressive, yet even now at close to ten years after the vintage, it’s showing a lot of oak overtones, and I doubt at this point they’ll every truly integrate. Nevertheless, it has impressive purity of fruit (cassis, spice), full-bodied richness and a clean, elegant style on the palate. It’s far from classic but still a terrific wine. Drink bottles over the coming 4-6 years.

85% Grenache (65 yrs), 15% Syrah (35 yrs). Not yet bottled. Deep, bright intense black cherry colour. Very bright, almost slightly raisiny ripe fruit (NB high proportion of Grenache) but not overripe. Griottes compote. Cool and dry and refined on the palate. (Improved by a light chilling of the wine, which had got a bit hot during the tasting.) (JH)
