Score 86/100 · Robert Parker, Dec 1998

The 1996 Chardonnay Mitsuko's Vineyard reveals toasty oak in the nose, as well as lemony, citrusy, honeyed notes. It is medium-bodied, well-made, and pleasant, although uninspiring. After a dismal beginning, Clos Pegase appears to be getting more serious about wine quality. The owners have wisely brought in Burgundian-trained Ted Lemon to consult, and he appears to be in the process of fleshing out the wines' mid-palates, giving them more length, ripeness, and natural textures. Aromas of oak spice, butter, toffee, lemon, lime and orange. Good texture and focus, thanks to a juicy lime skin freshness and firm acids. Rich in flavor but not at all heavy. Holds its shape nicely on the lingering finish.
