Score 95/100 · Drink 2021-2029, Jeb Dunnuck, Jul 2021

Coming from the Anderson Valley, the 2018 Pinot Noir Velvet Sisters has textbook savory, herbal, mineral style as well as wonderful darker cherry and exotic blueberry fruits, medium to full body, loads of floral and violet nuances, no hard edges, and a great finish. It's up-front and fruit-forward, yet it has plenty of tannins as well as remarkable purity and freshness. Drink this singular Pinot Noir over the coming 7-8 years.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Velvet Sisters is an attractive wine, but it is also lacking in body. The aromatics are promising, yet the fruit feels dried out and the wine feels light. I expect more here.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Velvet Sisters was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 28% new. Pale to medium ruby-purple colored, it gives up the most gorgeous perfume of red roses, Ceylon tea, cinnamon stick and garrigue with a core of kirsch, black raspberries and pomegranate plus a touch of Provence herbs. Medium-bodied, the palate is super intense with a seriously lively backbone and gorgeous plush texture, finishing long and layered. 290 cases were made.

Jackson Family Wines brand. Native yeast. Small lots. 16 months in French oak, 35% new. Fruit from Maggy Hawk vineyard at an elevation of 76–152 m in the far north of the valley. All 777 Dijon clone according to the tech sheet. 275 cases. Pale blueish crimson. An attractive savoury quality to this. Very juicy and fluid with the merest hint of coconut. Then dry and appetising on the finish. Needs a little bit of time to settle down but there is freshness of fruit here. I’d love to taste just the fruit! (JR)
