2019 Hartford Court Pinot Noir Velvet Sisters Vineyard

There is a deeper tone to the 2019 Pinot Noir Velvet Sisters that moves into notes of turned potting soil, cherry pit, and woodsy spice. The palate is full of candied raspberry, mineral rich earth, and crushed lavender. Drink 2022-2034. A part of the Kendall-Jackson family, Hartford Court was established by Don and Jennifer Hartford, whose first vintage was 1994. They began with two vineyard designated wines, and today they have expanded to include 36 single vineyard wines, dedicated to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel. Jeff Stewart, the general manager and winemaker since 2011, and Tiaan Lordan, who has been with the estate since 2010, share the role as winemakers today.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Velvet Sisters comes from Pommard and Dijon vines at the northern end of the Anderson Valley, planted in dusty Goldridge soil. Matured for 14 months in 28% new French oak, it has a medium ruby-purple color and delicate, fragrant scents of raspberry, strawberry, saline, cola and bergamot. The medium-bodied palate is silky and juicy, with mineral-driven fruits and a long, ethereal finish. 268 cases were made.

Named for historical figures known in the region who wore fine dresses and velvet shoes even in the rustic atmosphere of 1800s Anderson Valley. Grown in the Falk Vineyard in the hillsides of the region. Aged 14 months in 34% new French oak.  Notes of anise and freshly cracked pine carry the nose while the palate shifts to a mix of blue and black berries and a bit of violet candy. The palate is silken and a bit warming. This is a richer expression of Pinot built for those wanting a fuller mouthfeel and flavour from the variety. At the same time, it continues to carry the more lifted palate and slightly elevated acidity of the region. (ECB)
