A blend from the cooler climate site that comes across as softer and more approachable than the straight Syrah, the 2008 Gramercy Cellars Syrah "Lagniappe" is a perfumed, delicious wine that shows loads of spice box, dried flowers, lavender, and smoked meat characteristics that are wrapped around a core of ripe berry fruit. Medium to full bodied on the palate, the wine is fleshy and open, showing perfectly ripe fruit, good acidity, superb balance, and a rock solid finish. No complaints from me, and this should deliver over the coming 8-10 years. There was no co-fermented Viognier this year due to the freeze in the Forgotten Hills vineyard.

The 2008 Syrah Lagniappe was aged for 15 months in French barriques and puncheons. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it reveals a perfume of Asian spices, mineral, lavender, smoked meat, and blueberry. On the palate it is round and elegant with no hard edges to be found. Medium-bodied, spicy, and pleasure-bent, it will drink well over the next 8-10 years. Gramercy Cellars was started by Master Sommelier Greg Harrington in 2005. In a short time he has established a high bar for himself. Tel. (509) 876-2427; www.gramercycellars.com
