Tasting notes
From a ripe, dry vintage, the 2017 Chardonnay Old Stones is aging gracefully. It shakes off scents of matchstick and iodine to reveal baked apples, bread, honey and almonds. The medium-bodied palate is creamy and expansive with flinty fruit and surprising freshness. It gains in expression as it airs and will benefit from some time in a decanter.

Limpid yellow. Mineral-accented nectarine, orange, honeydew melon and white flowers on the highly perfumed nose. Smooth, fleshy and lively in the mouth, offering juicy orchard and pit fruit flavors complemented by suggestions of sweet butter and fennel. Shows very good depth as well as energy and finishes minerally and very long, with lingering melon and floral notes.
‘The baby sister to Sigrid’. A blend from several vineyards. Pure, lively lemon fruit and a slight creaminess to balance but no obvious oak though there is some spice on the finish. Fresh and clean-cut if not an absolute standout. Harmonious with moderate length but not complex (yet). (JH)
