The 2004 Oestricher Lenchen Riesling Spatlese “303,” picked in the first week of November near the end of this year’s Spreitzer harvest, was blatantly strutting its stuff. It comes from the Eiserberg, a parcel in which the record Rheingau Riesling must weight, for which this wine was named, was recorded in 1920 by the present brothers’ twice-great grandfather. Aromas of ripe peach, mango and orange usher in an oily, creamy, envelopingly rich palate featuring lightly caramelized peach, mango, banana, and plum paste. The finish is an absolute torrent of ripe tropical and orchard fruits, backed by an enormous amount of sweetness. Lock this away for at least a decade unless you have a really sweet tooth, but do latch on to some!
