Peppermint, sage, oregano and a hint of caramelized oak resin accent passion fruit in a powerful aromatic performance. The midpalate is glossy, subtly creamy and open-knit, with a Silvaner-like suggestion of milled wheat adding interest and an unexpected burst of fresh lime lending welcome bright juiciness. Bite and glowing piquancy of caraway, peppercorn, peach kernel and sage serve for slightly rustic grip, augmented by smoky, stony notes of a sort often associated with Forst’s basalt-inflected sites. There is ample finishing juiciness, though overt oak notes slightly detract from the finished wine to a degree that I had not noticed prior to its bottling.
