Less than 50 cases were made of the 2014 Three Sketches of a Dream, which is a blend of Roussanne and Viognier inspired by a mature bottle of Chave Hermitage Blanc. It was vinified with partial skin contact and bottled in late 2016, although it has not been released until now. Deep gold in color, its streaks of flinty reduction give way to exotic aromas of dried peaches and apricot, honeycomb, coriander seed and tarragon, plus loads of spicy undertones. The palate is full-bodied, satiny, expansive and savory with softened acidity and a long, textural finish. Drink it over the next 3-5 years as it reaches the apex of its maturity.

The 2014 Three Sketches of a Dream has a deeper gold, slightly evolved hue and a subtle nose of honeyed stone fruits, flowers, and brioche. Nicely balanced on the palate, it has medium-bodied richness, a layered, elegant texture, and a good finish. As with many of the whites from Matthias, it's well-made but more esoteric and interesting than enjoyable. While I always love the wines from Matthias Pippig, some of these latest releases played in what I call the “more interesting than good” category. While all good, there are hits and misses here.

The 2014 Three Sketches of a Dream, a Roussanne/Viognier blend, is an interesting wine to taste. It has certainly aged well, there is no doubt about that. Even so, I confess I enjoy these Rhône varieties more in their youth. Scents of tangerine oil, dried flowers, rosewater, cinnamon and burnt sugar linger on the exotic, substantial finish.
