Score 88-90/100 · Drink 2010-2018, Jeb Dunnuck, May 2010

The 2006 Rocca Family Vineyards Syrah is 100% Syrah from the Grigsby vineyard and was aged for 15 months in 65% new French oak. Showing similar aromatics to the ’05 with spice, toast and dark blackberry and cassis fruit, this shows a touch more ripeness to the fruit as well as a softer, rounder texture. The wine has moderate acidity, ripe fruit and quality structure. Drink over the next 5 to 8 years.

The 2006 Syrah exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as aromas of meat, tapenade, black cherries, and black currants. Richer, fuller, and more structured than its older sibling, it should evolve for 5-7 years. While these are both interesting wines that may merit slightly higher scores with another year or so of bottle age, they couldn’t be more different. www.roccawines.com
