All things considered, the 2005 Barbaresco Sorì Paitin has aged very well and still offers a good deal of freshness. Dark, almost to the point of being somber, the 2005 is a good example of the more modern style that was prevalent at Paitin in the mid-2000s. Mocha, black cherries, plums and smoke all meld together in the glass. The 2005 has enough overall intensity and voluptuousness to drink well for another decade. The 2005 spent 18 months in Slavonian oak casks that were mostly new at the time. The shorter time in oak compared to the 2004, the cooler vintage and the inclusion of the old-vine fruit that in many years goes into the Vigne Vecchie all help elevate the 2005.

Unfortunately I was only able to taste one Barbaresco from Paitin this year, but it is a gem. The 2005 Barbaresco Sorì Paitin is a gorgeous wine redolent of flowers, ripe red fruit and subtle French oak nuances. This Barbaresco offers lovely overall balance, with well-integrated tannins and superb purity. Today the wine is bursting with primary fruit and needs at least a few years in bottle to develop its tertiary aromas and flavors. This is a terrific effort from Paitin.

(tasted from barrel) Good deep red. Dark cherry, licorice, leather and mocha on the nose. Concentrated and spicy if a bit reduced coming from the barrel. But this shows more energy and lift than the nebbiolo, and lovely breadth for 2005. Finishes with suave tannins and mint and mineral nuances.
