Checking in at 39% Syrah, 34% Mourvedre, and 27% Grenache, the 2008 Caliza Winery Azimuth was aged for 20 months in French oak and shows a semi-opaque ruby red color to go with ripe, evolved aromas of red plums, licorice, hot stones, and meat juice aromas on the nose. Dried underbrush and chocolate like qualities develop with air, and this is no lightweight in terms of ripeness, yet it holds everything together beautifully. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and hedonistically styled, possessing loads of sweet fruit, a rich, light texture, and a heady, seriously mineral-laced finish that has fantastic length. Upfront and ready to go (with a decant), drink this full throttle GSM blend over the coming 4-6 years.

(39% syrah, 34% mourvedre and 27% grenache): Inky ruby. Cassis, licorice, olive and herbs on the nose. Juicy and soft, with ripe, sweet dark berry and bitter cherry flavors complicated by a smoky note. Finishes with fine but firm tannins and lingering smoke and olive notes. Pretty serious wine but there's good freshness here as well.

The 2008 Azimuth is a plush, up-front wine with plenty of richness in its dark red fruit. Ideally it is best enjoyed over the next few years. Azimuth is 39% Syrah, 34% Mourvèdre and 27% Grenache. Half of the Syrah was sourced from Torrin, the rest is estate fruit.
