Score 93/100 · Drink 2013-2018, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Aug 2013

A blend of 40% Mourvedre, 30% Syrah and 30% Grenache that spend 18 months in French oak, the 2010 Azimuth is a hedonistic, sexy Chateauneuf-du-Pape look-alike that exudes kirsch, red licorice, toasted spice, vanilla bean and mineral-like aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, supple and seductive, with a silky texture that stays light and fresh, this knockout 2010 needs a short decant if drinking anytime soon and will continue to thrill for 7-8 years. Drink now-2018. Run/owned by entrepreneur Carl Bowker, this up-and-coming Paso Robles estate needs to be on everyone’s radar. The wines are distinctly Paso and have fabulous concentration and richness, while staying beautifully drinkable. Tel. (805) 237-1480; www.calizawinery.com

(40% mourvedre, 30% syrah and 30% grenache): Vivid ruby. Floral cherry and red berry aromas are complicated by black tea, licorice and cracked pepper. Juicy, incisive red and dark fruit flavors are energized by zesty acidity and pick up a touch of lavender with air. Asian spice and floral pastille notes emerge on the sweet, focused, very persistent finish.
