Score 92/100 · Drink 2013-2020, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Aug 2013

Even more inky and opaque, the 2010 Cohort is a blend of 60% Syrah, 35% Petite Sirah and 5% Grenache that has loads of texture and richness, yet stays light and beautifully drinkable. Showing loads of brambly black fruits, chocolate fudge, smoked earth, violets and bouquet garni, it fleshes out on the palate and pumps out serious amounts of fruit on the finish to go with solid underlying structure and good tannin quality. It is a knockout blend that will shine for 8-10 years, if not longer. Drink now-2020. Run/owned by entrepreneur Carl Bowker, this up-and-coming Paso Robles estate needs to be on everyone’s radar. The wines are distinctly Paso and have fabulous concentration and richness, while staying beautifully drinkable. Tel. (805) 237-1480; www.calizawinery.com

(60% syrah, 35% petite sirah and 5% grenache): Glass-staining ruby. Powerfully scented aromas of cassis, blackberry, mocha, vanilla and woodsmoke. Lush and weighty in the mouth, offering pliant dark berry and sexy oak spice flavors and a velvety texture. Finishes with supple tannins and impressive cling, repeating the vanilla and cassis notes.
