From bottle, the 2016 Montagny 1er Cru is showing very well, wafting from the glass with notes of iodine, dried white flowers, toasted nuts and crisp green orchard fruit. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, elegantly glossy and multidimensional, with good concentration and a taut, chiseled profile. This is a serious Montagny.

Tony Morrhall's note: There are few Montagnys with this wonderful concentration and freshness too. This is made from bought-in grapes of excellent quality. Jean-Marc Vincent is a star. Pale greenish straw. Tight and scrunched on the nose. Some juicy fruit and a certain stoniness – almost more like a Chablis than a Chalonnaise! But there is some breadth and florality here that you wouldn't find to the north. Masses of acidity. This doesn't seem ready yet and is too tightly corseted to charm yet. But if you really value austerity, this might be for you. (JR)
