Score 91+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2014

(13.9% alcohol): Good medium red. Musky, savory aromas of raspberry and peppery herbs. Supple and vinous but rather backward, with good peppery lift to the classically dry red berry flavors. Not hugely ripe but nicely fine-grained and delicate in the mid-palate. Finishes with well-integrated ripe tannins and lingering raspberry and strawberry perfume. A lovely pinot noir with aging potential.

The 2012 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard possesses serious depth and power. At the same time, the 2012 is quite closed in on itself, which is not surprising, as Hirsch often gives wines of notable structure. It's hard not to imagine that the 2012 will be even better in another few years. If there is one site where the fruit might benefit from a little longer time in barrel, Hirsch is it. There is a good chance the Hirsch will blossom with more time in bottle. Time will tell.

The cool climate 2012 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard is a blend of equal parts Pommard and Mt. Eden clones. It reveals a more rustic style with higher tannins, good acidity and a burly, medium-bodied, spicy style with good berry fruit as well as texture. Although still rough around the edges, it should soften with bottle age and drink well for 7-8 years. This is the personal project of Ehren Jordan, who was the long-time apprentice at Turley Cellars. These are all elegant, cool climate, finesse-styled wines that were obviously influenced by European rather than New World models. Jordan owns estate vineyards in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA and purchased fruit from some of the top growers in that region. Tel. (707) 963-0530
