The 2019 Chardonnay Volpert Vineyard is Ferren's (very impressive) first release from the Volpert vineyard, which was planted in 2015 at 500 feet in elevation in western Sonoma, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It's aromatically layered, intense and pure: flint and white peaches are accented by wafts of lime candy, saline, cashew, coriander and citrus blossom. The palate is bursting with concentrated flavors that are balanced by tangy acidity and a singular salty character, and a touch of textural grip extends the shimmery finish.

The 2019 Chardonnay Volpert Vineyard is flinty with toasted spice, Meyer lemon, and crushed rock. The palate is balanced and full of tension. It is savory, with fresh acidity and a stony mouthfeel as well as pithy citrus, dusty earth, and a hint of baking spice on the finish. Allow some time for it to settle in and drink 2024-2034.
A new wine in this range, the 2019 Chardonnay Volpert Vineyard is a total knock-out. It emerges from a small vineyard on Taylor Lane across the street from Summa and the two Thieriot vineyards that I first visited before it was even planted. In the glass, the Volpert Chardonnay offers an enticing mélange of tropical fruit, butter, spice, passionfruit and lemon confit. The elements aren't totally put together just yet - the vineyard is too young for that to happen, and yet the potential is there for this to be a great wine one day.
