The 1991 Tokaji Betsek 5-Puttonyos, sporting 146g/L residual sugar, has a simple nose, not as clean as the 1990 and missing some fruit intensity. It seems a little rustic compared to more recent vintages. The palate offers light quince and orange peel notes but is missing some viscosity for a 5-Puttonyos, with a tang of bitter lemon and (again) quince on the finish. Tasted at the Royal Tokaji Company tasting in London.

RS 146 g/l, TA 9.2 g/l. First growth. Vanilla, sweet spice and a strong grape scent, which is redolent of Muscat or sweet sherry. Gorgeous, sumptuous liquified caramel on the palate. Long, ferrous finish with an almost tarry note. (RH)
