Fermented with 100% whole clusters and aged 18 months in barrel, the 2022 Syrah Soberanes Vineyard opens with dark, intense aromas of opaque fruits, asphalt and espresso. The palate is full-bodied and immensely powerful but maintains an admirable precision before transitioning into an opulent, staining and fiercely tannic finish. Fans of rich Syrah will find much to love with time, but it is best left in the cellar to soften for a few years.

Leading off the two Syrahs, the 2022 Syrah Soberanes Vineyard comes from a great vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands and was fermented with 100% whole clusters and spent 17 months in 40% new oak. If the Susan's Hill release is the Saint-Joseph (or even Cornas) in the lineup, this is more Côte-Rôtie, with a supple, layered mouthfeel as well as beautiful red and black raspberry fruits, leather, flowers, and peppery nuances. Medium-bodied, concentrated, and balanced on the palate, it has nicely integrated tannins and outstanding length. Where the Susan's Hill needs to be hidden in the cellar, this is much more upfront and approachable. Drink bottles any time over the coming decade.

The 2022 Syrah Soberanes Vineyard is dark, brooding and forbiddingly tannic. Inky, powerful and structured, this backward, young Syrah has a mass of fruit concentration lurking beneath the surface. The nose, however, is open for business, releasing sultry aromas of black licorice, orange peel, wild blackberry, thyme and menthol. I wouldn’t dream of touching a bottle for at least a few years, maybe more.
