Score 16.5/20 · Drink 2023-2030, Jancis Robinson MW, Feb 2023

22% whole-cluster fermentation with ambient yeasts. Aged in 18% new French oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. 264 cases made. Inky, opaque garnet. Smells of iodine and blueberries. The rich blueberry and cassis flavours are salty and mouth-watering thanks to excellent acidity. Faint, putty-like tannins hang at the edges of the mouth as cocoa powder and fleur de sel accompany the rich blueberry notes through a long finish. Big and ripe but not overblown. (AY)

The 2019 Syrah Sierra Mar captures all of the personality of this breathtaking Santa Lucia Highlands site. Inky blue/purplish fruit, lavender, mint, white flowers and juniper berries literally explode from the glass. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing. There's quite a bit of tannin, so a few years in bottle is advisable.
