Score 92/100 · Drink 2025-2032, Jeb Dunnuck, Aug 2023

All varietal that saw just a splash of stems and aging in 29% new barrels (the balance was in puncheons), the 2020 Syrah Tinaquaic Vineyard offers up a rocking bouquet of ripe blueberries, blackberries, game, bay leaf, and violets. With medium to full body, nicely integrated acidity and tannins, and a great finish, it has a wild, herbal, Northern Rhône-like vibe and I suspect will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age. It should last through 2032. I still find the 2020s to be slightly hit-or-miss from this reference point producer in the Central Coast, but the good news is that the 2021s appear to be a step up as well as more consistent.

The 2020 Syrah Tinaquaic Vineyard is fabulous. Rich and inky to the core, with striking depth, the 2020 is drop-dead gorgeous right out of the gate. Blueberry, violet, lavender, incense and licorice all meld together seamlessly. The racy, exuberant style works so well here. There's a touch of whole cluster (8%), but what comes through most is the wine's remarkable purity of fruit.
