Bright ruby. Deeply pitched dark berry preserve, licorice, incense and floral scents are lifted by a zesty mineral nuance. Sweet, penetrating blackberry and blueberry flavors show excellent clarity and pick up a spiciness with air. Powerful but lively wine with very good finishing clarity and youthful tannic grip. This site, which is planted to head-trained vines, dates back to 1905.

The 2012 Zinfandel Sodini Vineyard is one of the richest, most explosive wines in the range. Dark red fruit, iron, savory herbs, smoke, tobacco and mineral notes inform this intensely driven, focused Zinfandel-based red. Broad, rich and intense, the Sodini is firing on all cylinders today. Even with all of its richness, the 2012 has plenty of brightness and acidity in support of the fruit. These dry-farmed, head-trained vines were planted in 1905.

From a fabulous head-pruned, dry-farmed vineyard on Limerick Lane, the 2012 Zinfandel Sodini is another 300-case cuvee that was cropped at 1.25 tons of fruit per acre, was aged in 30% new French oak, and came in at 14.8% alcohol. Gorgeous aromas of blackberries, black cherries, pepper and spice box are followed by a wine with a rich, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel. It can be enjoyed over the next 4-5 years. Morgan Twain Peterson, the son of Ravenswood's Joel Peterson, has hit the wine scene with a bang, producing vibrant, personality-filled, delicious wines from extremely old vines and, in some cases, virtually unknown grapes, such as Aubun, Teredalgo, Trousseau Noir, Le Noir, Mission, Trousseau Gris, Grand Noir and Abouriou, as well as Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Carignan, Alicante Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Tempranillo. Many of these sites are heritage terroirs from the ancient past which, until Peterson's arrival, were largely ignored or were co-mingled into some innocuous industrial blend. Bedrock's portfolio is filled with exciting wines. The 2012s reviewed herein will all be bottled and released by Fall, 2014. Tel. (707) 343-1478
