Bright ruby. Powerful black and blue fruit liqueur aromas are complicated by spices, flowers and a touch of smoky minerality. Concentrated but lively as well, offering vibrant blackberry and floral pastille flavors that turn spicier and more tangy with air. Finishes supple and long, with lingering florality and smooth, slow-building tannins. There are at least 30 different varieties in this vineyard, which was planted more than 120 years ago. Pax Mahle is the winemaker for this new project, which is owned by Loren Grossman, a bicoastal investor. (JR)

Wilde Farm's 2012 Heritage Red Bedrock Vineyard is a Zinfandel-based field blend from Morgan Peterson's Bedrock Vineyard in Sonoma. Sweet rose petals, violets, mint, licorice and spices meld together in a weightless, translucent wine. The 2012 is endowed with striking perfume and tons of personality. Sweet floral notes, spices and mint inform the fresh, vibrant finish. All the elements are in the right place in this deeply expressive red.
