Score 88/100 · Drink 2013-2018, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2012

The 2001 Barolo La Villa comes across as big, rich and excessively heavy. The 2001 has aged pretty well, but at the same time it is heavily marked by oak. Smoke, licorice, plums and spices inform the muscular, imposing finish. There is an element of bitterness in the tannin that is likely the result of less than perfect barrels.

Seghesio's 2001 Barolo Vigneto La Villa offers a compelling, deep nose of spices, tar, and roasted coffee beans. Much more austere today than the accessible 2000, the delicious 2001 is dense and backward, offering dark fruit, tar, licorice and toasted oak flavors with excellent persistence and a lingering note of sweetness on thelong finish. A terrific effort that will require patience.

Bright dark red. High-toned aromas of raspberry, cedar and ripe tomato. Sweet, round and lush, with liqueur-like fruit. Could use a bit more lift and definition. Shows a bit more underlying structure than the 2000 but offers similar quality. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins.
