Tasting notes
The 2009 Le Cigare Volant is impressive. Made from 36% Syrah, 25% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre and the rest Cinsault that was aged in larger oak barrels, this medium to full-bodied, elegant red gives up complex notes of spice, blueberries, raspberries and violets, with a touch of Syrah pepperiness coming through with air. As with all of Randal’s wines, it wins more in its complexity and elegance than richness and power.

Bright ruby-red. Raspberry, lavender and pungent herbs on the aromatic nose, with a peppery nuance adding lift. Chewy red berry and bitter cherry flavors show good depth and energy, with a hint of allspice coming up gradually. Finishes with gentle, fine-grained tannins, a repeating floral character and very good persistence.
A blend of 36% Syrah, 25% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre and 19% Cinsault that was aged in larger oak foudres, the 2009 Bonny Doon Le Gigare Volant offers a juicy, slightly lean style in its dark fruits, charred earth, licorice and herbs. It has good fruit, bight acidity and clean, delicious style that's ideal for drinking over the coming 3-4 years.
